Deleting social media

Why I'm quitting social media.

Deleting social media

Lately I've started to notice that I'm spending way too much time on social media and on my phone in general. A decent chunk of my day just disappears into scrolling, and I want to change that.

My phone usage

My phone usage was getting bad. Every morning I woke up, the first thing I'd do was scroll on Reddit or X, and as everyone knows, those aren't the healthiest social media platforms. It got to the point where I was using my phone for everything, brushing my teeth, using the bathroom, falling asleep. No matter what I was doing, my phone was always next to me. It started to feel like my phone had a grip on everything I did.

What I'm doing about it

The first thing I did was delete Reddit, X and LinkedIn off my phone, these were the only social media platforms I had. LinkedIn is more of a professional network, so I'll still check it occasionally when I'm on my PC or laptop. I'm keeping Discord too, since that's how I stay in touch with friends.

I've also moved my phone's charging spot away from my bed and over to my desk, and I'm replacing scrolling with reading. The idea is to improve my sleep quality, since using your phone before falling asleep can mess with your eyes and how well you sleep. On top of that, I've set an alarm for 7AM everyday. Having it on my desk means I'll actually have to get up to turn it off, instead of hitting snooze from bed like I always do.

How can I get in touch?

I won't be active on any social media, so if you'd like to get in touch, you can send me an email or join my Discord server and pop a message in there. If you want to talk in private, just click on my profile and send a DM request or friend request.

If I don't accept your friend request, it's most likely because we don't share any mutual servers or friends. I don't accept requests from randoms, so make sure to join the server first. That way there's at least a mutual connection and I can accept your request.

Conclusion

I'm not saying social media is evil or that everyone should quit, it just wasn't working for me. Too much of my time and attention was going into scrolling, and I'd rather put that into things that actually matter to me, like reading, learning and getting better sleep. I'll probably post an update in a few months on how it's going and whether it stuck. We'll see how it goes. As always, thanks for reading!
